These days I’m reading the book “The 5 seconds rule” by Mel Robins. And here in this book I found the secret. Yes you heard it right, I found the secret. And the secret is nothing but the name of the Book itself i.e. the 5 seconds rule.
So what is this 5 seconds rule actually mean? If you haven't heard about this rule ago then let me quickly explain it.
Origin of the Rule
Few years back in a regular night the author was watching a space shuttle launch program in television in America. The final 5 seconds countdown before the rocket engines fired up, catch the author’s attention. 5-4-3-2-1 and the shuttle launched! The author immediately visualized the 5 second rule concept. She promised to herself that the next morning when the alarm will ring she will count 5-4-3-2-1 and launch her body from the Bed.
Next morning she did exactly what she had imagined. And continued this morning launching event for a couple of days and weeks. She witnessed that the activity of waking up on time has become a very easy task for her when she applied this trick from the first day. After getting this crazy result she discovered this 5 seconds rule and wrote her best selling book about this secret.
So the clear cut rule is that when you start a task you’ve to do 5-4-3-2-1 and then physically take some action regarding the specific task. That’s it.
Now let’s come to our main agenda i.e. the secret to wake up early in the morning. You know the secret. But before explaining the secret along with scientific evidences, you must know actually how many hours you’ve to invest in sleeping. I’ve just said sleeping is an investment. Because you also know that adequate sleeping hours are important to boost the productive hours in a particular day.
According to the Center for Disease Control or CDC, the sleeping hours for Teens is 8 – 10 hours and 7 hours for adults. So if you’re an adult then you’ve to sleep 7 hours before you wake up early. If you sleep very late then your brain adjusts your sleeping time i.e. 7 hours by waking up late in the morning. As simple is that.
But the game is not over yet.
Because everybody knows this facts and also knows the amazing benefits of waking up early but still most people can’t wake up in time. That’s the truth.
SO here come’s the 5 seconds rule.
As author described when your alarm rings in the morning you’ve to speak 5-4-3-2-1 and launch your body from the bed. To make it more satisfying you’ve to put your alarm 5 meters away from your bed so that you can’t able to hit the snooze button.
At first many of us thinks that this is a very self forcing or hurting activity in the morning. I also thought like that. But I was wrong. Because there’s a very rock solid scientific evidence & explanation which says this is exactly what you’ve to do in the morning when the alarm ring. And I didn’t know this before. So what is this explanation?
Science behind the rule
Now I want your attention here.
We sleep in cycles that take about 90 to 110 minutes to complete. About two hours before you wake up, these sleep cycles end and your body starts to slowly prepare to wake up. When your alarm rings, your body is in wake up mode. If you hit the snooze button and drift back to sleep, you force your brain to start a new sleep cycle that is 90 to 110 minutes long. That is the reason when you imagine to sleep just 15 minutes more after hitting snooze, and later found that you’ve slept for another 1 to 2 hours!
That’s exactly why you feel damn tired when you get up after few minutes hitting the snooze. It’s not because you didn’t get enough sleep. It’s because once you hit the snooze button, you started a new sleep cycle and then interrupted it.
So do not interrupt these sleep cycles and speak 5-4-3-2-1 and launch yourself from bed when the alarm rings.
From my personal experience, when you repeat this scientific process for at least a week then you no longer need to set the alarm. Your brain is automatically programmed for immediately wake up at a particular time in the morning.
I hope you’ve understand this whole process of sleeping and waking up early. If not then give it an another read! You’ll feel so much clarity in mind.
Thank you!
